A Decade-Long Journey:From a modest two-hundred-square-meter garden in Saigon to an authentic canopy of clouds in the heart of Đà Lạt

“We did not pave our space with concrete to create a conventional destination. Instead, we have dedicated a decade of patience, botanical passion, and reverence for the earth to restore a self-sustaining living ecosystem—a sanctuary where one may enter, find refuge, and be healed by nature.”

Chapter 01

From Gardens by the Bay to the Highlands of Đà Lạt

2015 · Singapore

In 2015, during a business trip to Singapore, I stood for hours beneath the colossal glass dome of Gardens by the Bay. Amidst that magnificent space, a persistent question began to take root in my mind:

Why rely on colossal climate-control systems to simulate an artificial cloud forest when Vietnam is already graced with Đà Lạt—a land naturally endowed with a brisk, temperate climate, valley mists, and ideal humidity throughout the shifting seasons?

2015 · The Dream

That was the genesis of a Vietnamese dream: to cultivate a miniature cloud forest. Eschewing mere ostentation, this endeavor stems from a profound yearning to commune with nature, seamlessly integrating the pristine beauty of Vietnam's native tropical flora into living spaces of genuine authenticity.

A Destined Encounter · Đà Lạt

The journeys between Saigon and Da Lat have begun. After months of wandering across the highland hills to immerse myself in the nature, life, and people of this region, I found my destined sanctuary. Located just within a five-kilometer radius of the city center, this haven is graciously embraced by the canopy of the Lam Vien forest, with its rear resting against Victory Lake—a natural feature that fosters an ideal humidity to balance Da Lat’s dry winter chill.

The Years That Followed · Healing the Motherland

First and foremost, the soil must undergo a process of detoxification. Following years of intensive crop rotation, which left the earth nearly saturated with chemical fertilizers and pesticides, we allowed the land to lie fallow. For many long years, we permitted wild grasses to flourish, welcoming the natural elements of sun and rain so the earth could breathe, purge, and cleanse itself of all residual toxins. Mother Earth had to be deeply healed and impeccably restored before she could embrace new life.

Filmmakers, botanists, and Vietnamese souls rooted in the motherland

“At The Cloud Forest, I approach our space through the lens of media and design, curating it with light and composition. Yet, to truly nurture life, artistry alone is not enough—it demands the rigorous precision of plant science.”

For many years, alongside my professional commitments in Ho Chi Minh City, I devoted all my leisure time to cultivating a modest, privately leased plant nursery:

Saigon, years of balancing two callings
Field trips into misty mountains, searching for carnivorous plants
“Carnivorous plants — a great passion that drove me to research and cultivate.”

Research & Academics: Delve into the fascinating world of Vietnamese tropical flora, with a particular focus on carnivorous plants—a profound passion that has inspired extensive research, cultivation, and the publication of numerous scholarly articles in the journal of the International Carnivorous Plant Society (ICPS).

Cultivating a Clean Agriculture Community: Co-founded and developed one of Vietnam's leading organic vegetable forums of its time, spreading vital knowledge on sustainable cultivation to safeguard both personal health and the living environment.

The clean-produce forum — sharing knowledge, not just vegetables

Self-Sourced Propagation and Vietnamese Heritage via Bến Tre Coconut Fiber: Eschewing reliance on industrial substrates and expensive imported sphagnum moss, The Cloud Forest integrates Bến Tre coconut fiber into its large-scale landscaping. Following a rigorous tannin-extraction process, this natural material is transformed into an ideal ecological bedding—retaining optimal moisture to foster a sustainable and thriving natural environment.

In 2020, the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic profoundly transformed my worldview. Believing life to be too precious to postpone one’s ultimate aspiration, I chose to leave my career in Saigon and relocate permanently to Da Lat. The ensuing three years became a period of quiet introspection—a time to experience and embrace Da Lat in its truest form, immerse myself in nature, patiently curate a collection of native heritage trees, and meticulously sketch every intricate detail of this sanctuary.

A 12-Meter Greenhouse, Natural Stream Stone, and the Art of Self-Sustaining Ecological Balance

Da Lat is becoming increasingly concrete!" Step into The Cloud Forest today and discover a miniature ecosystem in harmonious balance with nature.

Our twelve-meter-tall specialty conservatory was not conceived as a display of architectural scale, but rather as a deliberate engineering solution. It allows us to house mature indigenous fruit trees—such as persimmon, peach, plum, and jacaranda, which embody Đà Lạt’s four distinct seasons—indoors without height constraints. This twelve-meter elevation creates a vast thermal buffer, facilitating natural air convection and a circulation of cool breezes to ensure the utmost comfort for our guests. Most importantly, amidst Đà Lạt’s frequent rainfall, the greenhouse's covered roof ensures that your experience remains seamless, entirely sheltered from the elements outside.

The Geological Structure of the Koi Ponds and the Soul of Stream Stone

In constructing the four Koi ponds and the system of babbling brooks, we meticulously studied the local geological formations and hand-selected each natural boulder to harmonize seamlessly with the sloping terrain. Every pathway leading into the forest is paved with stream stones and pebbles. The rustic crunch beneath each footstep invites you to experience the authentic essence of a journey deep into the woods.

A Museum of Paleontology & A Four-Season Symphony

Ancient Dalat trees cast their shade over a million-year-old canopy of arborescent ferns; native Vietnamese wild orchids cling to aged driftwood; begonias bloom beneath the humid foliage, complemented by a unique collection of carnivorous plants gathered from around the globe.

The Organic Standard and Biological Koi Ecosystem

Within our humid greenhouse environment, pests and fungal pathogens present formidable challenges. Yet, we maintain an unwavering commitment to a chemical-free sanctuary, utilizing neither synthetic pesticides nor artificial fertilizers. The vibrant health of our Koi population swimming through crystal-clear waters serves as our most stringent biological certification: in the presence of toxins, Koi cannot survive. All potential pests are managed entirely through natural predators, carnivorous flora, and ecological controls.

Chapter 04

An Original Touch – Beyond Coffee

The Cloud Forest Đà Lạt was never conceived merely as a destination for casual snapshots. We have meticulously crafted this space as Đà Lạt’s singular ecological sanctuary—a restorative haven thoughtfully curated for both domestic patrons and international travelers alike:

A genuine sanctuary in the forest

where you can step upon natural stream stones, listen to the gentle flow of water, breathe in the pure, damp scent of moss, and cleanse your mind of the city's commotion—all without the burden of a long journey. Above all, it is a space of absolute serenity and safety.

Forest-to-Cup — Honoring Local Heritage

A profound reverence for nature is woven into every beverage we craft. Our celebration of regional specialties, such as Cau Dat Arabica and Oolong tea, serves as a tribute to the land that shelters and nurtures this sanctuary. Exceptional coffee and refined teas are catalysts designed to elevate your experience, yet they are merely one of many reasons to visit.

An Immersive Ecological Classroom for Children

Previously, for children to witness ancient tree ferns firsthand, touch the soft, cushiony texture of Sphagnum moss, or observe carnivorous pitcher plants in action, parents faced only two choices: venture deep into dense, perilous old-growth forests, or incur the high expense of traveling to artificial ecological parks abroad.

At The Cloud Forest, we bring this wondrous ecological realm directly into the view of young explorers. Within a sanctuary of absolute safety and pristine, oxygen-rich air, children are invited to step away from screens and truly experience nature—to touch stones and running streams, watch schools of fish glide through the water, and learn to cherish every delicate new leaf. We believe that the seeds of a lifelong love for nature and a commitment to environmental stewardship can only truly take root when young minds connect with the natural world through all their senses from an early age.

We nurture this sanctuary as nature sustains life itself: with patience, sincerity, and an unwavering commitment to chemical-free cultivation. As you depart, should your heart stir with a deeper affection and reverence for every blade of grass and leaf, and should your children carry the sparkle of joy in their eyes after a day of touching authentic nature—that remains the greatest reward for our ten-year journey.
